Thousands of chickens die in egg farm fire

WALWORTH COUNTY— Thousands of chickens are dead after a massive fire at an egg farm in Walworth County.

A barn at the S & R Egg Farm in La Grange went up in flames around 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

The fire required a huge response. More than 50 different fire departments and more than 100 firefighters from several different counties were called to the scene.

Getting enough water was an issue for firefighters since they had to truck it all in from several miles away.

Fortunately, the fire was contained to one barn. La Grange Fire Department said the design of the barn and its fire walls helped to stop the fire from spreading.

Fire crews estimate that between 250,000 and 300,000 chickens were killed.

No people were injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

S & R Egg Farm, a locally owned company, released a statement saying that they plan to rebuild the facility and there will be no disruption of service.

The owners thanked all the fire departments deployed for their efforts.
