WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man is now in police custody after assaulting a woman near an undeveloped area of the Milwaukee County Grounds.

The attack happened Sunday around 10:20 a.m. near Watertown Plank Road and 87th Street.

Many runners, dog walkers, and bikers use the trails.

“I can’t imagine that happening in broad daylight on a weekend because I always feel very safe here,” a runner said Tuesday.

The victim was able to escape and made it to the Wisconsin Athletic Club.

“It’s my understanding that we had some members that saw the victim and they helped walk her into our facility so we could call law enforcement right away and get her the help she needs,” Derek Deprey, Wisconsin Athletic Club Director of People and Service, said.

Wauwatosa Police say a 29-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested Monday evening for the assault. Many people found out about the attack through social media.

Wauwatosa Police confirmed the assault on Tuesday. They say information wasn’t immediately released because it would have, “severely impeded the investigation, allowed for the destruction of evidence or the suspect to evade arrest.”

The suspect is in police custody but has not been charged yet. Milwaukee Police said they aided in the arrest of the suspect.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else and there is no danger to the public.
