Strawberry Full Moon Overhead

We enjoyed a quiet night across the viewing area. It was milder overnight too!  Most spots held up in the mid range forties and even a few isolated spots west in the fifties. The milder temps came with quiet conditions and a bright full moon lighting up the night time sky. This full moon has been labeled as the Strawberry full moon. Full moons get their names from Native American tribes. Tonight's full moon was named as such because it signaled a time to gather ripening fruit during a short growing season.

We have likely heard of other ones like Harvest moon or Blue moon, but how about Sturgeon Moon?  That full moon coming up later this summer on August 29th was named from Great Lakes tribes a little closer to home. The sturgeon moon, also called the red moon, is so named because around the Great Lakes this is when the fish was most readily caught. According to Space.com that is, and the next one listed comes July, 1st. That's labeled as Buck moon.
