Rusk County deputy fatally shoots man during altercation

LADYSMITH, Wis. (AP) — A Rusk County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man after an altercation at a home over the weekend.

Authorities say a caller told dispatchers a man at the home was intoxicated and was afraid he could become violent. Deputies responded to the home in the Village of Hawkins, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Ladysmith, and one deputy fired during the Sunday night altercation.

Officers treated the man at the scene and he was taken to a hospital by ambulance, but died. No officers were hurt.

The Leader-Telegram reports two deputies are on standard administrative leave. The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
