Racine woman charged with reckless homicide after man overdoses on cocaine and fentanyl

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 30-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a man who fatally overdosed and charges are pending against a second suspect.

Jana Mehevic, 30, is now charged with First Degree Reckless Homicide, Manufacture/Deliver Cocaine, and Delivery of Narcotics.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were dispatched to a fatal overdose in the 900 block of Williams Street on February 18.

Upon arrival, officers located drug paraphernalia around the victim. It was determined that he died from a mixed drug intoxication of cocaine and fentanyl.

Phone records showed a conversation between the victim, Mehevic, and a second suspect who has not been formally charged yet. The conversation showed that on two occasions Mehevic and the other suspect went to Milwaukee to obtain drugs for the victim.

Mehevic allegedly admitted to police that she goes to Milwaukee to buy drugs for herself. She told police that the victim did crack cocaine on February 17 and that they bought drugs twice that day from Milwaukee. Mehevic also told police that the victim tried "two types of crack." However, investigators said that there is only one type of crack cocaine unless it's mixed with something.

Police also interviewed the second suspect who said that the victim asked him and Mehevic to get crack cocaine and that they did go and get the drugs to give to the victim.

Based on the investigation, police say that Mehevic and the other suspect are responsible for delivering the drugs to the victim which ultimately caused his death.
