On this edition of Racine & Me, Jacob Kittilstad’s first guest was the community group Por La Gente Association preparing for their annual Labor Day softball tournament. About two dozen teams had already registered for the competition on Island Park – and the money raised at the event goes to support scholarships for local students. Next, the United Way of Racine County came on to talk about their 2017 Kickoff & Day of Caring. The event serves as the start of the donation season – and it celebrates that moment with a giant day of volunteering. The organization hopes to inspire more than 300 people to roll up their sleeves and get dirty. By lending a hand to local non-profits, organizers say volunteers will learn more about the needs of the community. Click here for more information on the 2017 Kickoff & Day of Caring

There is a new healthcare option for people who are underserved in Racine. Kenosha Community Health Center has partnered with the Aurora Health Care Better Together Fund to create a mobile health clinic. The location can help patients take care of back-to-school physicals, medication management, flu shots, and management of chronic diseases like diabetes. But the guests explained that the mere access to care sends a positive ripple effect through the community. It currently has weekly visits at Knapp Elementary School, Gateway Technical College, and the John Bryant Community Center. Click here for more information the the mobile health clinic

And lastly, the Bacon5Kegs Run/Walk is ready to take over the Racine lakefront. The event – slated for Bacon Day on September 2 - starts and ends at the Racine Yacht Club. The items offered include bacon sandwiches, unique condiments for the bacon, bacon Bloody Marys, pulled pork, ham, breakfast sausages … the list goes on.
