One dead after suspected robbery shooting near 38th and North

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A longtime employee at a family-owned small business at 38th and North in Milwaukee was shot and killed this morning.

Candles outlining 40-year-old Ala Mahamoud's nickname now lay outside of North Avenue Foods after police say he was shot and killed during an apparent robbery.

"He was shot in the head. He got a son. My baby boy.  He got a daughter," says Mahamoud’s wife Katherine Mahamoud.

Known as ‘Polo’ in the community, Mahamoud's wife Katherine says he never met a stranger.

Katherine says the father of two worked at the store for more than 20 years.

It's the place where she says they met.

"He treated people like family. He loved his people,” she says. "He would do anything for you. He was a good husband. He loved his son and his daughter.”

Police arrived at the corner of 38th and North a little before ten Sunday morning.

Officials pronounced Mahamoud dead shortly after.

Shalay Gillispie drove by the store after getting word of what happened.

"The store is not going to be the same without him."

"He was the type where something could be five dollars and you could have only four dollars and he would let you slide."

Katherine remains prayerful she'll get answers.

"Whoever did it, they will be caught. They will be," she says.

Police are still searching for a suspect.
