OSHKOSH, Wis. (CBS 58) -- It’s a scene that’s become all too familiar.

Cellphone video shows Oshkosh West High School students run frantically out of the building towards safety.

“All of a sudden, a woman ran in and she said just run, run as fast as you can,” said Evelyn Green, student Oshkosh West High School student.

Police responded to the high school after a 16-year-old student, who was armed, confronted a school resource officer.

They got into an altercation.

“The student produced a weapon and stabbed the officer, at which time the officer fired on the student, striking the student one time,” said Dean Smith, Oshkosh Chief of Police.

The school went into lockdown mode.

Frightened students tried to get in contact with their parents. “I was scared, I texted my mom and my brother, 'cause I wasn’t sure I’d ever see them again.”

Parents and students were reunited at nearby Perry Tipler Middle School.

Many of them were relieved, but visibly shaken-up. “One of your worst fears, your children in danger. For this to happen in Oshkosh....just grateful that they’re okay,” a parent said.

Both the officer and the student are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The State Department of Criminal Investigation is conducting the investigation.

All Oshkosh District classes are canceled on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
