Bolingbrook (WGN) -- A woman has been charged and accused of brutally killing her own infant granddaughter.

Police say 61-year-old Alfreda Giedrojc has been charged with first degree murder in the death of a 6-month-old Bolingbrook girl.

Caren Hennessy lives next door to Giedrojc and her husband and never saw any sign of trouble or distress inside their Oak Lawn home.

That is until Sunday when lights and sirens were blaring on their block just before 11 a.m.

Prosecutors say Giedrojc was left alone with her granddaughter Vivian Summers for only a short while.

According to the Cook County State's attorney, the grandmother reportedly grabbed a sledgehammer she had hidden inside a closet of her home the night before and used it on the helpless child. Later, she confessed to using a kitchen carving knife too.

Today, she stood appearing void of emotion in court. With the help of a Polish translator she listened dressed only in a blue hospital gown of sorts.

The defendant's daughter, also the victim's own mother, was so excited about the birth of their first child in April. Neighbors say the Summers, Bolingbrook residents, are good people.

Giedrojc is due back in court October 28th.
