MPS welcomes traditional calendar students back to the classroom

MILWAUKEE -- It's back to school for thousands of Milwaukee Public Schools students today, and Gov. Scott Walker will help welcome them back to the classroom.

The governor will participate in the first day of school bell ringing at Thurston Woods Campus today, welcoming traditional calendar students to the start of a new school year.

MPS is also introducing a staggered start for 3, 4 and 5-year-old students. Students in those age groups will start today, Sept. 3 or Sept. 4 and will have their second day of school on September 5.

MPS officials say the changes will help younger students become familiar with official school procedures, allow parents to meet their child's teacher in a smaller setting, and allow teachers to get to know their new students better.

The district is also one of the first in the state to participate in a program that allows all MPS students to have free breakfast and lunch at school, regardless of family income.
