Milwaukee Alderman introducing resolution preventing Health Department hush policy

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Alderman Tony Zielinski is introducing a resolution to prohibit departments from enacting policies restricting employees from communicating with elected city officials. The resolution comes as elected officials have learned that the Milwaukee Health Department and other departments have policies preventing employees from speaking with others.

CBS 58 obtained a copy of the Health Department's policy that says, "Communication between MHD staff and elected officials, including the Mayor's Office, Common Council, the Milwaukee County Executive's Office, County Supervisors or other state and federal elected officials....must be authorized by the Commissioner of Health or Health Operations Administrator."

Alderman Zielinski believes the policy prevented workers from coming forward sooner about the lead problem.

The resolution will be addressed at a full Common Council meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6.
