Man killed in head-on collision involving semi in Walworth County

The Walworth County Sheriff's Office received a report of a semi versus car head on injury crash on Hwy 11/14 just west of Hwy 89 in the Town of Darien in Walworth County on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened shortly before 4 p.m.

Initial investigation reveals a 2008 black Subaru Impreza driven by 46-year-old Ryan Andrew Phetteplace of Janesville was eastbound when he went into the westbound lane and struck a semi head on. 

Phetteplace was the sole occupant in his vehicle and not wearing his seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-tractor and trailer was driven by 55-year-old Dennis Bennington from Coon Rapids Minnesota.  Bennington was the sole occupant in the semi and was not injured. 

Agencies who responded to this crash include the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Darien Fire and EMS, Mercy MD1 doctors, Rock County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit and the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office.
