Local Students Battle in International Robotics Competition

Area students will take on each other, and teams from around the world in a robotics competition this weekend.

Part of the Mukwonago BEARs team, and their robot, "Sam the Boulder Thrower," joined us live on the CBS 58 News at Four Monday afternoon.

The theme of this year's First Stronghold competition is medieval times. Teams of three robots must break the other team's defenses, and capture the opposing 8-foot-high tower by hurling boulders into it. BEARs Coach Greg Billetdeaux is a former team member, and says designing these robots help groom students for a bright future in engineering, while BEARs team member Miriam Huerta told us that these competitions make learning potentially difficult subjects fun.

The BEARs won a quality award at a competition in Duluth, MN earlier this year, and hope to reach new heights at this weekend competition. Practice rounds are this Thursday, March 24 with the competition on Friday and Saturday at UWM Panther Arena.
