MILWAUKEE-WE Energies is asking for a 5% rate increase in 2013 and a 3.6% rate increase for 2014.

It held a public meeting on the rate increase request in Brookfield Monday night.

A couple dozen people showed up.

The utility company says it needs the extra money for clean energy projects, like wind farms, and to make improvements at the Oak Creek Power Plant.

"So all of those projects together, about $1.3 billion worth goes toward reliability, " We Energies Spokesman Brian Manthey explained, "It goes toward environmental regulations, meeting those, staying in compliance and also meeting the renewable energy standard that was set by the state of Wisconsin. Those are really the key elements of this rate case in terms of the cost."

The issue will go before the Public Service Commission in Madison later this year.

A decision will be made by the end of this year.
