Taking Aim: The New Ladies Night OutCBS Special Reports
Elaine Boldt loves her job, but when she's not armed with food at Dylon's Restaurant, she's relaxing on the shooting range. "I just love taking care of people and serving them," said Boldt.
“Even if they may come from a stressful day at work, when they leave here they are relaxed." Boldt is a member of Girls with Guns, a no-fee group for women who share a passion for what they call the shooting sport. Lawyers, architects, and nurses are some of their professions. The age range is from 25 to about 75. “Being a real estate agent, for the extra, I did get my concealed carry license in order to be a little safer out there,” said Sarah Cole, a frequent shooter. "It's a social ladies club, except we shoot," said Barb, founder of Girls with Guns. The girls meet once a month at Fletcher Arms in Waukesha and the group has grown from two women to more than 70. “I went to a restaurant that my friend owns and I told her that I had just bought my first gun. I was so excited. And she said…you did? I wanna learn to shoot, and then it multiplied,” said Barb. It multiplied so much that Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus heard about it and joined in on the fun. “I’m able to meet other women that are also going to go through that class on concealed carry and understand how to use a gun properly, I think that’s important," said Nickolaus. Salesman and instructor Mike Sylvester says ever since the concealed carry law passed, packing heat has become very popular among women. "Approximately forty percent of the people that take our concealed carry class are women," said Sylvester. At the Shooter Shop in West Allis they have also seen a spike in women shooters, and less than a year ago they began having a Ladies Day. Every Tuesday women can shoot on the range for free. "We saw a lack of female shooters and just decided this might be something to help get them started," said Ben Giese, salesman at the Shooter Shop. "I think it's awesome, I think it could be the new ladies night," said Juliann Joerres, a shooter at Ladies Day. "Of course we'll come here before we go out to get our drinks," said Erin Mciness, a shooter at Ladies Day. Although it is a very relaxed and fun atmosphere, all of the women shooters stress that practice and instruction are necessary. “Get training and practice and be comfortable, if you’re not comfortable don’t have [a gun],” said Cole. |

I really think you republicans shouldn't read my posts anymore, they just seem to get all your noses out of joint. So, from now on, I will blog just for Dems -- who, like me, 'like me'. LOL.

Barbee, Why so hateful & stereotyping? Why does everything become political? I’m a female who’s as Liberal/Democratic as they come & have been ‘packing’ for over 20 years, yes without the benefit of an actual permit. Thousands of people have functioned that way for years now, but since the advent of the permit, our preference is just out in the open. Men & women have been able to tote their rifles to ‘sportsman’s clubs’ and shoot for hunt & sport without nasty connotation, but let them tote a pistol for sport & protection and everyone has an opinion. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, but you’re not entitled to your own facts, and the facts are: Americans overall are far less likely to be killed with a firearm than they were when it was much more difficult to obtain a concealed-weapons permit, according to statistics collected by the federal Centers for Disease Control.

Wow, some shocking anti gun comments above from those who must live in la-la land. What is so wrong about proper training and skill building and being prepared to defend self and family from bad guys? It's only good awareness and proper responsibility. Or perhaps you don't in your dreamy utopian world think bad guys exist. Amazing state of denial that could prove deadly if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time as you will have "no little friend" when you may need one to save your life.

Barbee-its about being safe and I'm sorry that you guys think that this world is peaches and cream, but its time to get with the times and stop blaming republicans. Get your own opinion and grow up

Packing deadly weapons: a glamorous, 'ladies night out' the Sarah Palin way. Relaxing with other responsible, career minded women (and even the token stay at home mom) and shouting "Say hello to my little friend" to all the would-be attackers they foresee having to vigilantesize. Unreal. For sure this has gotta be a repub thing, because us Dem babes know it ain't about the guns, it's about the gun boats (if you get my drift). Talk about power and weapons and a fun night out.
