GREENFIELD -- Baby formula has become a hot commodity for local criminals. Surveillance video shows two suspected thieves in Greenfield trying to walk off with the product by the cart-load.
According to Greenfield Police, the Wal-Mart on Layton Avenue in Greenfield was targeted twice in April. Surveillance video shows two women loading nearly $2,000 worth of formula.
Police arrested the women when they were walking out of the store. "One of the females had confessed that they were attempting to sell it back at various Wal-Marts for store credit or cash," says Detective Sgt. Ray Radakovich of the Greenfield Police Department.
Greenfield police say they've busted thieves for nearly a dozen other formula thefts this year. Detective Sgt. Ray Radakovich says the product is a popular target for thieves because it sells well on the black market. "We believe the vast majority of it was being sold to less reputable smaller businesses in depressed areas of the metro area where it is then resold."
The women arrested are charged with retail theft.
