Suicidal man killed by Milwaukee police identified
MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police identified the man shot by an officer during the evening hours of April 24th as 45-year-old James Coleman. The shooting took place near 72nd and Mill Rd. around 8:15 p.m.
Police were called to the house by Coleman's aunt. Police say she told them he had taken several pills, and threatened to kill his aunt and himself.
Officers arriving at the house found Coleman wielding a large kitchen knife, and observed he already had cuts on his wrists. Coleman ignored officer's commands to drop the knife, and charged at officers. He was shot by a 29-year-old police officer.
Police say Coleman received medical attention from the Milwaukee Fire Department, but died at the scene.
Family members tell CBS 58 Coleman has some mental problems, and his condition was being treated with medication. They also tell us Coleman hasn't taken his medication for some time.
The police officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation. This is standard policy at the Milwaukee Police Department.
