South side home infested with bedbugs, tenant loses everything inside

MILWAUKEE-- Bed bug infestations are on the rise this summer in Milwaukee.  The Department of Neighborhood Services says it receives about 60 calls a month about bed bug problems.

Jose Belen and his family have lived in an apartment on Madison Ave on Milwaukee's south side for more than a year. His daughter noticed the bed bugs three months ago. Since then, they've thrown out almost everything inside the apartment.

"I lost more than $5,000 because I had to buy new furniture and the next furniture got infested too," said Jose Belen.

But who should foot the bill? The tenant or the building owner?

The Department of Neighborhood services says it's a matter of cooperation.

"Ultimately, it is the owner's responsibility. The owner would have to bring in some kind of extermination company, but that process will incorporate tenants who need to clean their unit, and perhaps discard clothing or furniture," said Tom Mishefske, Operations Manager at the Dept. of Neighborhood Services.

It is possible to get rid of these blood sucking creepy crawlers, but it will cost you anywhere between $150 to $2300 to hire a professional pest control company.
