Sheboygan South High School student contracts tuberculosis

SHEBOYGAN -- A student at Sheboygan South High School was diagnosed with tuberculosis. In a letter to parents the school district says they are working closely with the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health. The district assures parents that free testing will be available to students who were in close contact with the infected student.

We're told the infected student was diagnosed on April 23rd, and was mostly contained to one classroom throughout the day. The parents of the students in the same classroom got a different letter than most parents.

Health officials say the student contracted the disease from a family member. Transmission usually occurs by inhaling or breathing infected air over a continuous period of time.

The infected student is being treated with a six month antibiotic regimen. Health officials say there is no immediate threat to the community.
