Scam artist impersonating law enforcement personnel
WAUKESHA COUNTY — Residents be ware. According to the Brookfield Police Department scammers are impersonating law enforcement personnel in order to defraud residents out of money.
A suspicious person who identifies themselves as law enforcement says that the potential victims owes money for unpaid taxed and claims that if the money is not paid that a warrant will be issued for their arrest.
The phone calls will often show up on the caller ID as the name and correct number of a law enforcement agency such as the Brookfield Police Department.
The caller requests a call back to a different number in order to obtain the payment.
In at least one case the caller referred to himself as Officer Tom O’Brien and was described as having an Indian accent.
There are related cases that Waukesha Police Department is handling as well as the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department. The Caledonia Police Department is also investigating a similar complaint.
