MILWAUKEE WI -- A man who plead guilty to attempted first degree intentional homicide in the stabbing of his ex-girlfriend on the Milwaukee Area Technical College campus is sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Prosecutors in court said Ruben Casarez stalked and harassed his ex-girlfriend before showing up at MATC in September of 2012 and stabbing her repeatedly because she refused to take him back.

She would have died said prosecutors had it not been for 2 students in a nearby room who heard her screams and rushed in and tackled Casarez.

In court before the judge handed down his Cesarez apologized to the victim, his children and the MATC community.
