Residents fighting new plant proposed in West Allis
West Allis -- Residents in West Allis are concerned over a proposed cement plant in their neighborhood. They tell CBS 58, the one already in operation near 116th and Theodore Trecker Way creates enough dust in the area.
"You can see it sometimes," said Pat Ruud who's lives in the neighborhood. "The dust or the trucks going by and the stones falling and everything you can see that."
There's a lot of truck traffic already in the area from various businesses. Michels Corporation has applied for a special use permit in order to put a temporary batch plant in the area behind Quad Graphics. Alderman Michael May said they would work on the Zoo Interchange project to pave the approaches and roadways.
"When concrete operations are going at night which is primarily the time the Zoo Interchange will be paved," said May. "People are trying to sleep in the neighborhood and they got the beeping trucks the back end of trucks smacking each other."
At some point there will be a public hearing for residents to address their concerns.
Here's the full statement from Michels Corporation:
“Michels Corporation has applied for a Special Use Permit from the City of West Allis to place a temporary batch plant for our use in the construction of the Zoo Interchange Project. Michels’ intended use is allowed by the West Allis City Code in this location. Our Special Use Application fully explains our complete compliance with the West Allis City Code including sections applicable to dust and noise. In addition, since July we have worked with the City of West Allis Planning Department to proactively address any concerns of the City or any neighbors. For instance, we have modified our intended truck route away from West Theodore Trecker Way. We have also gone to extensive lengths to explain that our intended use is not a commercial operation or even a daily operation. Our intended use is one of limited intensity and duration only as required for our work on the Zoo Interchange Projects. Michels is a local Wisconsin company with a track record built upon performing quality work safely and with care for our environment. We plan to demonstrate those values to the City of West Allis.”
