Partially demolished Sydney Hih building goes up in flames
MILWAUKEE --- The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a three-alarm fire that started just before 1:00 a.m. at the Sydney Hih building located on the corner of N. Old World 3rd Street and W. Juneau Avenue.
The building's fate has been under debate for almost 10 years. Sydney Hih is a collection of 4 buildings constructed independently, and 2 of the 4 buildings had already been demolished.
The fourth floor and roof of one of the buildings were destroyed by the fire.
Sydney Hih was built in the 1800's and was owned by Dr. Nicholas Senn. In the late 1800's and early 1900's it housed a bank. The building later became an icon for counterculture in the 1970's and it had artist studios, stores, and a club.
The Milwaukee Fire Department Chief on the scene said it was difficult to fight the fire since the building was not structurally sound.
One onlooker told CBS 58 that he will miss the building.
"Everyone I know, knows someone that was a part of that in some way," said Davee. "It's an iconic Milwaukee fixture that you didn't even know you knew, but it will definitely be missed."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
