Police investigate officer involved in shooting in Waukesha
WAUKESHA-- Waukesha Police are investigating after an officer is involved in a shooting early Sunday morning.
Waukesha Police and Waukesha County Sheriff Deputies were called out to the 500 block of Spring Crest Circle around 1:45 a.m. to investigate a possible suicidal subject.
911 callers told authorities that the 44-year-old man refused voluntary mental health assistance earlier in the day and had talked about jumping off a bridge.
The callers, an elderly couple, were in the residence with the man when officers arrived.
They said that the man had armed himself with knives and threatened to "cut throats."
The 44-year-old man called the Waukesha Police Department dispatch center and said that he was holding a male hostage with two knives.
The female caller was able to escape the residence.
The suspect exited the residence with two knives and immediately charged at officers disregarding their commands to drop the knives.
The Waukesha Police Department said that officers were forced to shot in defense of their lives.
The man was stabilized and given medical attention on the scene.
He was flighted for life to Froedtert Hospital.
The callers and officers were not injured.
The suspect is currently listed in critical condition, but is expected to survive.
