Off-duty MPD officer helps catch bank robber in GreenfieldMILWAUKEE -- The Great Midwest Bank near S. 27th St. and Layton Ave. was robbed around 10: 24 a.m. The robber handed a note to the teller demanding money, and fled the scene on foot. Off-duty Milwaukee police officer Daniel Morrell just happened to be in the bank's parking lot using their ATM when the robbery took place. Morrell had planned to withdraw money for fast food across the street when he noticed a man running from the bank and grabbing his waste. "You know when you see someone running from the bank and grabbing his waste your first thought is did he really just rob that bank?" Morrell took off after the suspect in his personal car, finally cutting him off on foot at 23rd & Barnard streets. "I was chasing him you know and continued yelling stop police." He followed the robber, captured and called for backup. Police say the robber was arrested at S. 23rd St. and Layton Ave. without incident. They also recovered the money he stole from the bank.
