No more classrooms? Wauwatosa offers online courses for students

WAUWATOSA WI -- Strong academics, flexible schedule, free tuition and you don't ever have to leave the house. That's now a viable option for middle and high school students  throughout the state of Wisconsin thanks to a new online program being offered by the Wauwatosa School District.

Called the Wauwatosa Virtual Academy it will be open to students in grades 6 -12 and according to the district would give them the flexibility to finish their school work "whenever and wherever works best for them."

The program will be based in Wauwatosa but will be available to any student in the state.

Many parents asked does this mean their children no longer have to go to school? The Program's Administrator Dennis Mahoney says that's not the goal.

"We're just looking at other ways, new options, new avenues to make kids successful, that's what we're trying to do so our students might be students that maybe have academic issues or maybe they just can't find the classes they want to get, or maybe kids that have been bullied or just don't feel comfortable in a regular setting."

He says students can complete their degree online with this program.

The virtual schools will have teachers available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and the courses says Mahoney will have the same standards as a classroom setting.

The program is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year.
