FOND DU LAC COUNTY-- The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department has released the name of the man who died in a house fire that he set himself.

Authorities said that the blaze that 54-year-old Joseph M. Shafer set in his own home was so big that it closed down part of a nearby highway and forced neighbors to evacuate their homes.

Authorities initially responded to the home on Main Street in the Village of Rosendale for a welfare check.

They had received information that there was possible smoke inside the residence and potentially someone in the home.

When deputies arrived the saw windows covered in black soot.

They also noticed a gas can outside the residence and a strong smell of gasoline.

There was a cord running from the house to the garage which was later determined to be fireworks.

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department sent its robot to examine the house before attacking the flames.

The investigation into the fire is still ongoing.
