LAS VEGAS (AP) -- An opera-singing Miss Wisconsin tops contestants in the first round of the Miss America talent competition in Las Vegas, while a swimsuit-clad Miss Utah scores honors in the lifestyle and fitness category.

Miss Wisconsin Laura Kaeppeler (KEP'-ler) is taking home a $2,000 scholarship for her performance of "Il Bacio" during the Tuesday night preliminary. The talent portion is 35 percent of a contestant's preliminary score. She's a native of Kenosha.

Miss Utah Danica Olsen earned a $1,000 scholarship after appearing in a Deaville Komplique swimsuit with gold and Swarovski crystal accents. The fitness category is 15 percent of a contestant's score.

Two more winners in each category will be selected during two more days of preliminary competition.

The final competition is Saturday at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

We need campaign reform, Feingold and McCain did well enough but didn't go far enough. We need to stop the political lies that are sent over the airwaves. Make them responsible for any lies they pay to have spread for the purpose of getting elected. Only allow debates to be aired. Money the politicians need will be minimal. The time period for the debates would be 6 months prior to elections. No special interests allowed for any reason to help any candidate. Your candidate will stand on his/her own merits not those of the Koch brothers or Exxon or GE .You will either tune in to see who you are voting for or you'll live the ignorant life you live now by listening to right wing radio. Maybe that is the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats aren't inundated with propaganda on a daily basis by all the republican backed special news shows, democrats are like people from Missouri 'SHOW ME' the facts not what you are told is the truth.(No more nixons,reagans or bush)
