Man running illegal funeral service accused of defrauding Medicaid

by Chris Patterson

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee resident Douglas Patton is facing criminal charges for allegedly billing the Medicaid program for funeral services he never performed. He's also facing charges for illegally running a funeral service for three years.

Patton submitted a false claim for payment under the Wisconsin Funeral and Cemetery Aids Program, and allegedly forged documents to support his claim. He allegedly signed the name of the next-of-kin of a deceased person to get $1,500 from Milwaukee County.

The Wisconsin Attorney General's Office says Patton claimed to have performed funeral services that were never performed. Patton allegedly filed a claim for funeral and burial services including embalming, dressing/casketing, facilities and equipment, visitation and a casket. The deceased person he filed this claim for was cremated, not buried, and we're told no visitation or wake was held. Patton was paid $2,010.44 for this false claim.
