Milwaukee St Patrick's Parade Will Go On No Matter What the Weather
oldest and largest parade in state of Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE-It's time to start making plans, the Milwaukee downtown St Patrick's Parade is this Saturday, March 9th.
It will go on regardless of the weather.
After all they were marching in Milwaukee in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland even before Wisconsin was a state.
"Even before Wisconsin was incorporated they were marching, " Stacie Callies of the Westown Association tells CBS 58 News.
The parade kicks off from 3rd and Wisconsin at noon. The shops at Grand Avenue are a great place to watch since you can go inside the mall atrium where special treats are available and entertainment.
Truth be told any spot along the parade route is fine since so many restaurants and taverns are along the way and open early to accommodate all the parade goers.
After the parade passes by Grand Avenue Mall it takes a left on Plankinton, it then goes left on Kilbourn for a couple of blocks before turning onto Old World Third Street. It's at this intersection that you'll find the grandstand and can hear the announcer present the various units.
From there the marchers will make a right onto Juneau and then a right on Highland finishing up near the Water Street Entertainment District.
For the past 47 years the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin has organized the parade to ensure authentic Irish culture is represented.
But as Callies put it, "Everybody's Irish on this day so it really is for everyone."
Milwaukee's parade is the Saturday before the official holiday March 17th so as not to conflict with other regional parades.
Milwaukee has also shown high demand to start events early and keep them going for the week leading up to the official day.
Milwaukee doesn't forget the true meaning of the holiday and celebrate a special St Patrick's Mass at 8 a.m. before the parade at St Patrick's Church at 8th and Washington.
There is also a post parade party at the Irish Cultural Heritage Center at 21st and Wisconsin.
