Two men rescue 90-year-old man from sinking car
KENOSHA COUNTY -- He was trapped in a sinking car and the water was all the way up to his nose. That's when two other motorists made a desperate attempt to save a 90-year-old man in Kenosha County, Wednesday.
Two men who just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Pictures show part of the dramatic rescue after a 90-year-old man lost control of his station wagon and ended up submerged in a Kenosha County river off of Highway 142. According to investigators with the sheriff's office, the water made it all the way to the driver's chin when two Chicago men who witnessed the crash quickly jumped into action. CBS 58 spoke to one of them over the phone: "I just went and grabbed my hammer from my tool box, smashed the side windows and tried to open the doors from the inside, but I couldn't do it, so I smashed the sunroof of his car and me and my friend we pulled him out through the roof," said Greg Drozdzik. Once the two men pulled the driver out through the roof, they waited until help arrived. Assistant Town of Paris Fire Chief Richard Perkins was one of the rescuers on scene. The Town of Bristol also stepped in. "Basically making sure the scene was safe, the car wasn't going to shift, there was a little current not much we were fortunate all the ice had melted because the river was a little higher so he could've been in the water a lot longer," said Asst. Chief Richard Perkins with the Town of Paris Fire Department. Thanks to the quick thinking of those two guys who happened to be driving by at the time, this situation turned out better than expected. The Kenosha County Sheriff called the men heroes. "What they did is truly remarkable actually going into freezing water and breaking the windows and pulling the guy out with just a few inches left in the car before he would have drowned in the water," said Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth. The victim was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in Kenosha with minor injuries. |
