MILWAUKEE- The social security numbers of thousands of MPS retirees were put in plain view on a letter recently sent out.
The letter was sent by a third party vendor regarding prescription drug coverage for MPS Medicare D recipients.
According to MPS, upwards of six-thousand letters may have gone out the exact same way to other MPS retirees.
The school district says the vendor who mailed the letter is to blame.
An MPS spokesperson an e-mail to CBS 58 that said:
"This incident does not reflect the secure manner in which MPS safeguards staff and retiree social security numbers. We apologize to our retirees who were impacted by the mistake made by our vendor Express Scripts.
We consider this isolated incident an extremely serious situation and will not tolerate this lapse by our vendor."
The district also said that they are reviewing their legal options with the city attorney.
MPS also sent a letter to Express Scripts.
