MILWAUKEE- A Milwaukee police officer is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the foot early Saturday.

At about 2:45 a.m., the officer and his partner saw a number of people in the Mobil gas station parking lot at N. 7th and Atkinson.

As the two officers drove into the lot to investigate they heard multiple gunshots.

While trying to get out of the squad car, the officer who was injured removed his gun from the holster and accidentally pulled the trigger.

He fired one round into the heel area of his right foot.

Police did arrest a suspect at the scene and a gun was recovered from the gas station.

The investigation into that incident continues.

The injured officer is assigned to District 5. He is 29 years old with two years of service.

He is being treated at a local hospital.
