Local Olympic hopeful makes sex abuse claims

WEST ALLIS - A U.S. Olympic hopeful who trains at the Pettit Center is leveling serious allegations against an icon of the sport. 31 year old Bridie Farrell says when she was training for the 1999 Olympic games Andy Gabel, a Marquette University graduate was her teammate. She was 15 and he was 33. Farrell says Gabel became a mentor for her and began spending more and more time with her. Farrell says it began to get physical to the point of molestation. Farrell says she felt powerless and didn't think anyone would believe her allegations against a 4 time U.S. Olympian. Gable, who at one point served as President U.S. Speedskating, resigned from all of his U.S. and International positions with the sport after the allegations surfaced. We tried to reach Gabel for comment, but he was unavailable. He did tell a newspaper he apologized for having an inappropriate relationship with a teammate two decades ago.
