Leroy Butler now target of Federal investigation
MILWAUKEE- The Gannett Wisconsin Media is now reporting that a federal grand jury has subpoenaed documents related to his charity, the Leroy Butler Foundation.
Reports show that the IRS has been investigating Butler since at least July, probing why he has been raising money in Wisconsin over the last decade but has made only one annual filing since 2002, even though he's continued to raise money under that name through this year.
The agency expanded the case to include Federal prosecutors.
In a Federal Grand Jury there is no judge or defense, it's just the prosecutor, the jury, and a witness.
Therefore, Geske said most cases end up with an indictment.
If that's the case with Butler, that means he'll be charged in the Federal court system, which starts the process of possibly going to trial.
How quickly the process moves depends on the potential charges themselves.
The Leroy Butler Foundation announced that it will shut down in February.
