Growing Power offering free gardens to daycare centers

early lessons on healthy eating

by Michele McCormack

MILWAUKEE-Growing Power founder Will Allen, an innovator in urban farming techniques, is offering   free gardens to the first 50 daycare centers who take him up on the offer.

Allen is convinced that fighting childhood obesity means teaching healthy eating habits from an early age.

"This is the start of it," Allen told CBS 58 News, " the daycare teachers can come out and develop somewhat of a little curriculum around how to grow food. The kids can participate and help plant. So, they can get that hands on experience of how to grow."

The daycare doesn't  even need a yard. The Growing Power Gardens are made with composted soil that can be laid over concrete.

Allen hopes to have all 50 installed by the end of the month.
