West Allis---Flames and smoke could be seen shooting out of the Schramka-Borgwardt Funeral Home and Creamations Services building on 81st and Lapham in West Allis Friday night.

According to the West Allis Fire Department a 911 call was placed at 9:42 p.m. and crews arrived at the funeral home just minutes later.

Upon arrival, crews found visible flames and heavy smoke coming from the second story window.

The Fire Department says the fire started on the second floor near the stack of the crematorium that runs from the first floor to the second floor and through the roof.

Fire Department was on scene for about 4 hours battling the blaze.

The damage estimate is $180,000 to the building and $70,000 to its contents.

A representative from the funeral home tells CBS 58 that no live people were in the building when the fire broke out.

There were three bodies in the care of the funeral home at the time. However, there was no harm to bodies because of where they are stored. The bodies have since been transferred to a sister facility and the funeral home is in the process of notifying the families.

The funeral home is not sure how long the 81st & Lapham location will be closed.
