Fire on Milwaukee's east side

by Laura Matovina

MILWAUKEE—An old building with narrow stairwells made a difficult job for firefighters.

The fire happened inside a wood frame duplex at Newhall and North around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire started on the first floor and spread all the way up to the attic, but it’s not clear how it started.

There were working smoke detectors and everyone made it out safely.

Damage is estimated at $100,000.
