Fire Captain speaking out after confrontation with intruder at fire station
MILWAUKEE—A Milwaukee firefighter is speaking out about his confrontation with an intruder in the firehouse.
“I got the sleep out of my eyes and realized you're not supposed to be here. So, I grabbed a hold of him and we started scuffling. I was able to open the door, yell for help. The lieutenant that was working that day Pat Bertone came out and was able to hold him and that's when I felt And as we were still wrestling I felt something sharp in my back twice and I said, I think this guy stabbed me," said Fire Captain Daniel Nikolaus.
Captain Nikolaus suffered minor injuries in the scuffle with the armed intruder over the weekend at the headquarters for Engine 16 and Battalion 5, which is located near 103rd Street and Fond du Lac.
Nikolaus said that his job as a firefighter is inherently dangerous, but it was his training as a State Fair Park police officer that he relied on to get through the ordeal.
He’s back to work now and looking forward to helping people.
