Driver in double fatal crash didn't have a license
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department is investigating a deadly crash on U.S. 41 in the northbound lanes.
It happened near Vilet Street just before 1:30, Monday morning.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department tells CBS 58 a woman was driving the wrong way on the highway when she struck a vehicle, causing a four vehicle chain reaction crash.
The preliminary investigation, based on witness accounts, indicates that a wrong-way driver was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes and struck another vehicle head-on.
The drivers of these two vehicles, a woman and a man, were extricated from their vehicles by a Milwaukee Fire Department Med Unit and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is investigating for positive identification.
Their identities will not be released pending notification of relatives.
The wrong-way driver was never a licensed driver.
It is not yet known if she entered on an off ramp or made a U-turn on the highway.
Another driver was taken to a local hospital and is said to be in critical condition.
A fourth person was also hit but is expected to recover.
The northbound lanes of U.S. 41 were shut down for about 5-hours while crews cleaned up the crash. It re-opened shortly before 6 a.m.
It is unclear if alcohol played a role in the deadly accident.
Wisconsin State Patrol performed a crash reconstruction.
