MILWAUKEE -- Family Dollar Stores is now offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the man who shot 44-year-old Bill Melendez Jr. while the story was being robbed on August 6th.

In a statement to CBS 58 News Family Dollar Public Relations Manager Bryn Winburn said "Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Bill Melendez, Jr."

Police have released surveillance video of their suspect, it is not clear from the video why he pulled the trigger.

Family Dollar went on to tell us that  "The safety and security of our customers and Team Members is our first priority and we take situations like these very seriously."

But just minutes after the crime scene tape went up on the southside on Tuesday family members of others workers spoke out.

"It's very scary," Julie Goff told CBS 58 News, "I had a feeling something like this would happen after what happened at the other dollar store out of state."

She's referring to the July shooting at a Family Dollar store in Tampa, Florida where  a 48 year old manager was shot dead while intervening to save a co-worker.

A quick review of our own CBS 58 News archives show police alerts this past March, February and October of 2012.

But Milwaukee Police have yet to say if they think there's a trend of targeting the chain.

Family Dollar is addressing the allegation head on.

"Family Dollar has proudly operated stores in the Milwaukee region for many years, in many case in areas where other retailers have left, " explained the P.R. Manager, "While I am unable to go into specifics, please know that we strive to create a safe working and shopping environment by tailoring our store operations and security for each store."
