Expert witness says not enough evidence to call Derek Williams death homicide
by Chris Patterson

MILWAUKEE -- The death of Derek Williams was initially ruled natural, and was later changed to homicide.

A jury is charged with determining if police officers can be charged with a crime in the death of Williams.

In day two of the inquest, an independent expert testified offering a third conclusion on the death of Williams.

Dr. Alice Birones with the U.S. Air Force Medical Examiner System took the stand.

She consulted and reviewed materials of Derek Williams case like the video of him in the Milwaukee police squad car, toxicology and autopsy reports.

Birones believes the evidence doesn't point to homicide as the cause of death, instead she ruled the death "undetermined."

She also said Williams' sickle cell trait may have contributed, but was not the sole cause of death.
