Elementary and middle school girls run 5k race
WEST ALLIS -- Running a 5K is an accomplishment, especially when you're only 8-years-old.
Nearly 200 girls from the Milwaukee area ran in the Girls on the Run Fall 5K on Sunday at Greenfield Park in West Allis. The race marked the end of a 10 week program. Girls on the Run is for 3-5 grade girls (and a similar curriculum is available for 6-8 grade girls called Girls on Track) who enjoy learning life lessons through running. The girls meet at schools or YMCAs around Milwaukee twice a week and have a different lesson each time that focuses on healthy behaviors. The girls play games and run to learn more about the topic. Girls on the Run has expanded a lot in Milwaukee since it started five years ago. There were 13 sites for the fall program. The international non-profit is in more than 200 cities. There are programs in the fall and in the spring. For more information log onto www.gotr-milwaukee.org. |
