Dog alerts family of fire

WASHINGTON COUNTY— Officials in Washington County are investigating a fire that broke out in an upper apartment on Franklin Street in the Village on Newburg.
 

The residents called 911 after being alerted of the fire.
 

They were awoken by the family dog and noticed heavy smoke in the apartment.
 

The evacuated and found that the lower unit was on fire.
 

The lower unit which was unoccupied was full of heavy smoke and some visible flames.
 

There were working smoke detectors in the building.
 

There was moderate damage to the property as a result of heavy smoke and fire, but the there is no damage estimate available as to the damage done.
 

There was no need for Red Cross assistance as the tenants had other living arrangements made.
 

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
