Fire at a greenhouse complex causes extensive damage

by Becky Mortensen

MENOMONEE FALLS---Just before noon the Menomonee Falls Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at Shady Lane Nursery in the Village of Menomonee Falls.

Upon arrival, flames could be seen shooting through the roof of one of the green house structures.

Several fire departments from surrounding jurisdictions responded.

The fire caused a partial collapse of the building and a power line also fell across the roof of the greenhouses.

WE Energies was called to the scene to turn off the gas and electricity to the complex.

Several Shady Lane Greenhouse employees were on scene and one was responsible for calling 911.

There were no injuries in the fire.

By 2:19 p.m. the fire was extinguished and an investigation began.

There is some indication that a welding project may have been the cause of the fire, but that remains under investigation.

Damage estimates are not yet completed.

The greenhouse was filled with Christmas plants. How many were damaged is not readily available.

No foul play is suspected.
