MILWAUKEE---A Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputy was temporarily trapped in his vehicle after being struck from behind by a drunken driver.

It happened during a traffic stop on I-43 northbound at Locust Street at 1:08 a.m. Saturday.

The deputy was in his vehicle doing traffic stop when his squad was rammed from behind by a suspected drunken driver.

The force of the impact pushed the trunk of the squad into the backseat, trapping and injuring the deputy.

The squad was also pushed into the vehicle that was pulled over for the traffic stop, but no injuries were sustained by the driver of that car.

The Milwaukee Fire Department removed the deputy from the squad. The deputy was experiencing head, neck, back and shoulder pain so he was placed on a backboard and transported to the hospital.

Roberto Maldonado, a 22-year-old Milwaukee man, was arrested for OWI-1st –Causing Injury. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was not injured.

He faces up to one year imprisonment if convicted.
