OCONOMOWOC-- Crews battled a late night blaze at an apartment building in Oconomowoc.

The fire broke out around 11:15 p.m. Friday night at the complex on Bolson Drive.

All the residents made it out of the building safely before firefighters arrived.

The fire was reported in the basement, but it spread and crews were met with high heat, smoke and fire when they tried to enter the building.

They attempted an aggressive interior attack, but due to rapidly changing conditions and the fire spreading they were forced from the building and had to battle the fire from a defensive attack.

Residents had still not been allowed back in their apartments Saturday morning. Some were afraid that they may have lost everything.

The building appears to be a total loss.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
