Catholic Stores Stocked With Papal Items

for the curious and faithful

WEST ALLIS-When a Pope has been elected or passes away there are usually commemorative items issued for the faithful.

But with Benedict's surprise resignation, there's been a bit of a scramble by local catholic book stores and gift shops.

At Catholic Books and Gifts at 76th & Greenfield they have set up a display of items already in stock.

Benedict was a theology professor before becoming Pope so they have a vast library of books written by him and about him.

"Certainly customers are talking about it," Assistant Manager Mark Schuh tells CBS 58 News, "so, there's a lot of interest but we haven't seen that result in sales."

There best seller happens to be the book called "Life Lessons" about former Milwaukee Archbishop now Timothy Cardinal Dolan of New York. It was written by his brother Bob.

"It's the most we've sold that I can remember here," Schuh says, "more than the Pope's."

Go online and items abound from bookmarks to bunting to special medallions. Prices range from $5 to $60.

Those who deal in  all things Catholic will tell you it's not about the money.

As Schuh explained: "Our purpose is to serve the lord, serve the church serve the neighborhood and society."
