Milwaukee--A campaign that encourages shoppers to think and shop small is gaining momentum.

Small Business Saturday was launched 3 years ago by American Express to get people to support locally-owned shopes like Sparrow Collective in Milwaukee's Bayview neighborhood.

"You can go to a chain store and buy something that's manufactured or you can come down to the local businesses in the area and pick up something that's one of a kind, it's unique. It's made by someone whose money's going directly into their pocket, and you're supporting somebody who's supporting themselves" said Sparrow Collective owner Jessica Franzen.

We also caught up with Matt Mielczarek who had just bought a new record album from Acme Records and Music Emporium along KK near Lincoln.

"I definitely look to a smaller retailer because I think there's an experience there, there's an amount of knowledge that you're getting from that merchant."

American Express estimates that more than 100 million people came out to shop at independently-owned small businesses during last year's Small Business Saturday.
