MILWAUKEE -- The body pulled from the Milwaukee River on August 20th has been identified as 35-year-old Darnell Thelen. Thelen was out with his girlfriend 30-year-old Tara Gulden the night before in Milwaukee's Third Ward neighborhood.

According to the Milwaukee Medical Examiner's Office,  Thelen and Gulden drank two bottles of wine at the Milwaukee Public Market. Gulden told investigators she and Thelen went down to the pier at Water and Chicago streets. She says they sat on a seat on the dock, but doesn't remember anything between that and being rescued from the river.

CBS 58 spoke to Thelen's father Wednesday night.  He said his son's wallet and cell phone were found on the pier which leads him to believe his son may have tried to save his girlfriend.

"He was just a helpful person, someone that was very worthwhile." explained Thomas Thelen.

Gulden was rescued from the river that night, but Thelen was pulled from the river the next day.
